SAN FRANCISCO – Today, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) launched "Encrypt It Already," a campaign pushing six tech companies to better protect their users’ privacy through end-to-end encryption.

The privacy-defending nonprofit recently contacted Meta, Apple, Google, Bluesky, Telegram, and Ring, imploring them to implement long-requested encryption features to secure their users’ data and conversations. Now, EFF is asking users to make their voices heard using the new "Encrypt It Already" website.

"The privacy of our files and communications has never been more important," said Thorin Klosowski, Security and Privacy Activist at EFF. "End-to-end encryption is the best tool we have to keep them secure. It ensures that even the services you use cannot access what you store on them. That’s why we’re calling on these companies to keep their promises, protect their users, and Encrypt It Already!"

When used correctly, end-to-end encryption prevents digital messages and other files from being accessed by anyone except their creators and intended recipients. Using simple but powerful cryptographic techniques, end-to-end encryption renders the contents of these files unreadable to both eavesdroppers and service providers themselves. This puts users, not companies or governments, in control of their data. Despite this, end-to-end encryption remains a rare feature only available on some digital services, when it should be the status quo.

EFF is asking these companies to deliver previously announced end-to-end encryption features, enable existing end-to-end encryption features by default, and launch new end-to-end encryption features they don’t have but should. With end-to-end encryption, Meta, Apple, Google, Bluesky, Telegram, and Ring can better protect our private messages, data backups, and camera footage.

In addition to directly requesting end-to-end encryption features from these services, EFF is asking these companies’ customers to speak out for their privacy. On the "Encrypt It Already" website, visitors can find links to feature request forms on several of the companies’ websites and messages to share with the companies on social media.

"Encrypt It Already" follows EFF’s 2019 "Fix It Already" campaign, which pushed tech companies to fix longstanding privacy and security issues. Highlighting these issues led to several victories for consumers, including privacy-protecting changes on VenmoWhatsApp, and Slack.
